There are so many different views when it comes to creating a daily self-care routine or ritual. However, the reality is that unless you begin taking the first steps to add some of these positive habits into your day consciously, you won't even get to see the benefits they can bring into your life.
For those like me who are obsessed with sharing the importance of self-care, it's because it transformed our lives in some way, shape, or form. Now, we want to share that knowledge with all of you.
I promise it's not some form of trick or even mindless sharing. You honestly won't know how powerful taking care of your body, mind, and soul through self-care can be until you yourself have gone through the process of experiencing it through every fiber of your being.
It might sound a little dramatic, but as a mom and wife who always cared for those around me, self-care wasn't even in my vocabulary. In fact, I would even go as far as to say that creating a daily self-care ritual for myself saved my life and the relationships with those who I love the most.
So, you might be asking by now or curious to know the benefits of creating a self-care routine, but before I share the why, let's talk about the what.
What Is Self-Care?
I like to define self-care as filling yourself up with the things that bring you joy, happiness, and fulfillment when it comes to your body, mind, and soul.
Self-care is taking care of your needs first so that you can show up fully for your children, spouse, or partner.
Many believe that self-care is about the fancy bubble bath, the expensive massages, or even travels. While all of those are most certainly a form of self-care, they are not things that you can sustainably do every single day.
I believe that self-care should happen daily, so we want to find things that light us up, and we can do every single day without breaking the bank or taking up our entire day.
So, please, don't for one second think that the influencer you follow on Instagram goes on vacation every day they want to create a special self-care ritual. That's not reality.
Many of us are busy mamas who run a business, work outside of the home, or take care of our families. So, creating a sustainable self-care routine is imperative to make sure that you stick with it.
Now, while we're on the subject of motherhood, let me tell you right upfront.
- Self-care is not selfish
- Self-care does not take away from your family
- Self-care is not self-indulgence
- Self-care is not about lavish things
Now that we got that out of the way let's get to the importance of creating a self-care routine.
What Are The Benefits Of Creating A Self-Care Ritual?
I could probably write a million reasons why having a self-care routine is essential for you, but instead, I'm going to share my 10 top most important reasons.
- Self-care helps you be kinder and love yourself more deeply.
- It can help boost physical, mental, and emotional health.
- Creates time for yourself to spend alone.
- It can help lessen anxiety, stress, and depression.
- It teaches you to take care of yourself and even allows you to learn what you enjoy doing.
- It helps you to slow down by teaching you to be mindful and present.
- Boost your immune system.
- Creates self-compassion for yourself, allowing you to get to know the most authentic you.
- Encourages you to eat healthier.
- It helps you sleep better.
Not only does self-care improve who you are as a person, but it also allows you to keep your cup full so that you can pour into others when they are in need without having to sacrifice yourself.
That was one of the most important lessons I learned initially, especially when society makes it seem so wrong for moms first to take care of their needs.
I don't hear anyone complaining when dad goes fishing or golfing.
My point is, no one is going to tell you to create that self-care routine, ladies! You need to take charge and know-how worthy of it you are!
Simple Self-Care Ideas To Get You Started
I couldn't share a post about the benefits of self-care without giving you at least a few ideas on where to start.
It can be very overwhelming and confusing when you see so much information out there when it comes to self-love and self-care, but if there is one thing I would have you take from this post, is that whatever you choose to do for self-care, make sure it fills you up emotionally, physically, and mentally no matter what anyone else says.
You decide where you want to start. Just make sure it feels right to you. Don't just do it because it's what others are saying is the right thing. Do it because you want to try it out and if it doesn't work out, try something else.
No rules are stating that you must stick with the same routine. In fact, I encourage you to change it around and make it fun!
Here are a few of my favorite ideas that got me started on my self-care journey:
- Cooking healthy, delicious foods
- Outdoor nature walks
- Reading a book
- Take a bath
- Binge your favorite television show (yes, there are days that you want to lay in bed and watch "Friends")
- Listen to a podcast
- Dance to your favorite songs (uh, hello 90's music)
- Water your plants
- Color, paint, create
- EFT Tapping
- Put on a homemade face mask
- Sit outdoors and do nothing
- Take a nap
- Stretch your body
- A hot cup of tea or cacao
- Pull Oracle or Tarot cards for guidance
Self-care is not a once size fits all. We all have different needs, lifestyles, and likes.
Don't get stressed or overwhelmed choosing what to add to your self-care routine. Instead, have fun and go with the flow. Do what feels right for you and your body.
